Hundreds of students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have held a peaceful protest on the campus over high prices of
goods and services within the school campus in Akoka, Yaba.
It was gathered that the protest started from Sunday and lasted till yesterday. The protest was said to have been instigated by students who were complaining about rising cost of commodities that hiked the cost of living on the campus, for which they blamed management of the institution and business owners.
The UNILAG Students’ President was said to have mobilized students for the protest that spread all over the campus. The spontaneous spread of the protest led to immediate closure of shops and business activities by the school authorities, it was gathered.
“Imagine, we students are buying sachet water at N10 per sachet, Indomie super pack sold for N60 in town is N70 here, same as Indomie hungry man size which is N100 everywhere except in my school where it goes for N110. Also soft drinks in plastic bottles such as Viju, Fanta, Pepsi are sold for N120 per bottle instead of its supposed retail price of N100,” one of the protesting students said.
The management’s decision to close down all shops was communicated to the students via a text message from the Dean of Students Affairs, and the management was said to have invited some leaders of the students for talks.
